Mine seem cold and lifeless compared to Fed's "human touch" statistics, though. Smile

Didn't see that page....wow!

All the graphs a math nerd could love!

I see we had no posts and only a couple of users online a couple of days ago....was the site down or something?

And I see few people post between 7 and 11 a.m. but it picks up briskly after lunch.....

Gee, this is fun!

Is the difference between "Unique Cookies" and "Unique IPs" because of dynamic IPs?

Just curious

That, plus proxy servers, masquerading firewalls, and people clearing their cookies. These things all make the correlation between cookies, IPs, and unique users problematic at best. There's no really solid way of counting individual users short of forcing them to log in. Even that isn't foolproof if people share their account information. Smile

masquerading firewalls

Question Question Question

I have a router (firewall?) and ZoneAalrm. Is any of them 'masquerading'?

If it's a stupid question please consider it's coming from somebody who's only got Level 1 of posting urls

Very Happy

eta

I have 2 machines sharing one internet connection through an SMC router. Therefore I assume they have the same IP. I only log on from one machine. If I logged on from the other machine would it have the same IP addr but a different cookie?

VanLuke,

To the outside world you have only one IP address and it is assigned to your router by your ISP.

Does your router masquerade? Yes, if it is a NAT router which it probably is.

"oogaM" is a separate account from Mr. Magoo's. I'm assuming it's a different person, as opposed to Mr. Magoo's alter ego (unless my theory about Mr. Magoo really being Performance Anxiety is correct).

oogaM

thanks.

I guess 'masquerading' means it shows an IP addr other than the one assigned by telus.

eta

And after rereading your post:

"VanLuke,

I conclude that once again I've been wrong.

If you looked at the ip address on your two machines, you'd probably find they have something like 192.168.x.x as ip addresses. The 192.168.x.x addresses (and the 10.x.x.x) ip addresses) are reserved for private network use. These addresses cannot be routed across the Internet. When your machines make a connection to the Internet, your SMC router converts the source address on the outgoing packets from the 192.168.x.x address to the real IP address that your service provider gave to the router, and then converts the returning data packets back to the 192.168.x.x address before sending it to your internal computer. This process is called Network Address Translation, or NAT. If you connect to TAT from both of your home computers, it would increase the unique IP counter by 1 and the unique cookie counter by 2.

No. I use a special algorithm to adjust discombobulated users. You wouldn't even feel a thing. Wink

Thank you.

Even a Level 1 [whatever title you gave me previously] can follow that.

When I tried learning Linux I used the other machine to log on to our former home from, a Linux system and kept the Win machine for "back-up"

The IP addr it gives me is indeed 192.xxx.xxx

Steve, why can't I be a smart as you are?
