| We mentored a refugee family from Sudan for a year a while back. When they arrived - in December - the wife looked out the window and wept. Saskatchewan in winter looked like such a wasteland to them. We didn't realize until the beginning of March that they really thought everything was dead. They thought we were pulling their legs that the trees were going to leaf out again soon. |

I dunno. After the whole "rape-rape" thing, I think Whoopi needs a mouth diaper. _________________ ø¤°`°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°`°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°°¤ø, |

Remember back when Roman Polanski was protesting his detainment and possible extradition, and lots of entertainment personalities rallied to his defense? On "The View", Whoopi said " "I know it wasn't rape-rape. I think it was something else, but I don't believe it was rape-rape."
So I think that if you want a definition, "rape-rape" is REAL rape. The big kahuna. So big, you have to say it twice.
Not to be confused with drugging a child and penetrating her against her will. You'd need to ask Whoopi what an appropriate word for that is. _________________ ø¤°`°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°`°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°°¤ø, |

| That was a very low moment. Up till then I'd had nothing but good to say about Whoopi Goldberg. She wasn't alone in defending Polanski, sadly, but "it's not rape-rape" was appalling. |

What surprised me as much as anything was that it was on The View. Who'd be shocked if some lugnut on Sports Line made a comment like that? But a woman, on a show that's primarily aimed at women, diminishing a man drugging and raping a girl? I was expecting it to be her Don Imus moment, but I guess The View forgives. _________________ ø¤°`°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°`°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°°¤ø, |

| Goes to show how engrained the idea that any rape victim who wasn't assaulted in a public place by a complete stranger must have been asking for it is in our culture. |

I enjoy the "cat love" commercials for cat food (Whiskas?) where buddy is so engrossed with playing with and petting his kitty (who is busy nuzzling him) out on the porch that he is oblivious to his golfing partner who is standing there waiting for him:
[to kitty] "You know what we should do? We should go for a picnic! Yeah, that's right!..."

I also like the Orville Reddenbacher (sp?) ad with the little girl who is having a tea party with her dolls and a big bowl of popcorn... and when her dad and brother come by to raid the popcorn she quickly covers the popcorn, protesting loudly, "Tea party only!"... leaving the dad and brother to dress up in floppy hats and fuzzy boas, sipping tea and eating popcorn in the final scene. _________________ "The dignity of an animal is measured by his capacity to revolt in the face of oppression." -- Mikhail Bakunin |

I got a chuckle out of this ad on my yahoo.ca home page -- I have just added a few elements to highlight the *ahem*.... unfortunate... choice of words:

Snerk, Heph.
I must say that although it's self-serving of them (and I usually drink from the tap) I am pleased with Brita's ads highlighting the waste involved in buying plastic water bottles. |

This is a real thing in the world
| Quote: | | Say hello to Frito-Lay's newest Japan-only product, Tights-kun Doritos. "Tights-kun" (which loosely translated means "Buddy-boy in tights") is a moderately popular illustrated character in Japan, and Frito-Lay is using him as a mascot to draw attention to its new black corn chili Doritos. Every few weeks, a new version of the package is released with a new Tights-kun antic and a bit of copy that gets consumers giggling, nodding in agreement, or feeling a sense of nostalgia.* The packages are fast becoming collector's items. |
| Quote: | | This particular pose (foot in crotch) is known amongst the Japanese as denki anma (translation: electric massage). Japanese boys are known to put each other in the position, especially when imitating pro wrestlers. Done correctly, the foot is placed on the perineum and the guy in control shakes his whole leg to send vibrations into his victim. In terms of western youth antics, it's a bit like giving somebody a noogie, except in this case some recipients are actually fond of being on the receiving end (despite the obvious risks). |

Edit: Hmmm. Upon reflection, this is a depiction of bullying, so not so funny. |

It isn't so much that I like these commercials, but I've made similar comments about them myself, especially on those The Keg ads, wherein a pack of female humans keep flashing their huge flesh-ripping carnivorous teeth. _________________ "The purpose of government is to protect the weak from the powerful" Hammurabi

My 14-year old and I rewound that new Old Spice commercial twice during the hockey game tonight.

| The interesting thing about those Old Spice commercials is that they haven't really got anybody to buy old Spice, at least last time I checked they hadn't, which was in the middle of the "I'm riding a horse" phase. |

Agreed. If Isaiah Mustafa's run has come to its natural end, then why couldn't they bring back NPH instead of Terry Crews? |

Yesterday I actually bought one of those big Kit-Kat chocolate bars, just because of the commercial. I don't recall when that's ever happened before.
It was OK, but not great. I don't often eat chocolate bars, but when I do, I like O Henrys, Mr. Bigs, Sweet Maries and Coffee Crispen. _________________ "The purpose of government is to protect the weak from the powerful" Hammurabi
