Twenty years ago, the Chinese government ordered the People's Liberation Army to crush protests by workers and students protesting for democracy and against economic changes being instituted by the government of Deng Xioping, resulting in the massacre at Tienanmen Square. The number of people killed remains in question, with estimates between several hundred and several thousands. _________________ "Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear." - Thomas Jefferson |

| TS's post reminded me that the Tienanmen massacre happened around the same time that the Ayatollah Khomeini died. June 3rd. |

Dale Smith reminds us that "[Thursday] marked forty years of official bilingualism in Canada – legally enshrining the linguistic duality of our fair nation. Exactly...and it's only because we were worried about the health and safety of their civilian population, particularly the women and bairns, that we didn't roust them off the entire Island and toss'em into the sea.
That might well have been a wee mistake on our part...a scirt of a miscalculation, so to speak... |

And that my friend, is why I've never gotten too worked up about why Obama or Pelosi aren't charging Bush and Cheney with war crimes - while their lies and cooked up WMD intelligence was pretty bad, it was hardly unique. As Chomsky has correctly stated every President since WWII is guilty of war crimes or at the very least gross violations of international law. This of course includes both Repugs like Nixon/Kissinger, Reagan, both Bushes or Dems like Carter/Brezinski, Clinton and the "hope and change" dude now ordering ILLEGAL drone strikes on Pakistani civilians I mean "suspected terrorists". The whole bunch, from Truman right through are/were criminal scum who have no respect for either human rights or true democracy. _________________ I can't support bike lanes. Which was, of course, a total lie. The Taliban had already offered to turn bin Laden over, but were rebuffed. It's important to state this, to counteract the Ministry of Truth types who try to re-write history. _________________ "The dignity of an animal is measured by his capacity to revolt in the face of oppression." -- Mikhail Bakunin |

Do you think it was in any kind of good faith?
Several years earlier they similarly refused to hand him over, despite evidence linking him to other terrorist attacks.
| Quote: | | After the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings in Africa, Osama bin Laden and several Al-Qaeda members were indicted in U.S. criminal court. The Taliban protected Osama bin Laden from extradition requests by the U.S., variously claiming that bin Laden had "gone missing" in Afghanistan, or that Washington "cannot provide any evidence or any proof" that bin Laden is involved in terrorist activities and that "without any evidence, bin Laden is a man without sin... he is a free man." Evidence against bin Laden included courtroom testimony and satellite phone records. Bin Laden in turn, praised the Taliban as the "only Islamic government" in existence, and lauded Mullah Omar for his destruction of idols like the Buddhas of Bamiyan. |
Sounds like they were already cozy.

"Similarly" to what? They offered to turn him over after 9-11. I don't know that that was not a genuine offer, but neither do you.

Kind of sounds like they weren't so much going to turn him over, as try him on their own terms.
| Quote: | | On 7 October 2001, before the onset of military operations, the Taliban ambassador to Pakistan offered to "detain bin Laden and try him under Islamic law" if the United States made a formal request and presented the Taliban with evidence. This counter offer was immediately rejected by the U.S. as insufficient. |

Now *there's* an unimpeachable source. I distinctly recall the Taliban offering to turn bin Laden over to the US. If you can find something a bit more authoritative than Wikipedia (and preferably NOT a US government source) that contradicts that memory, I'll consider revising my opinion... _________________ "The dignity of an animal is measured by his capacity to revolt in the face of oppression." -- Mikhail Bakunin |

Wikipedia is often nice enough to cite its own sources. Is the Telegraph a mouthpiece of the U.S. government? How about Justice not Vengeance? I'm not familiar with them, but they don't really seem like big fans of Uncle Sam.
So it looks like the offer was to send him to Pakistan to be tried, initially, in a Sharia court. I would suggest that this would be similar to an alleged gaybasher agreeing to be tried, but only in Jamaica, by a special court made up of local musicians. _________________ ø¤°`°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°`°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°°¤ø, |

A bit late, but eighty years ago today the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council found that under the Constitution of Canada women are persons and entitled to all the rights of persons. The judgment also created the "living tree" doctrine, which underlies many of the rights-expanding decisions of the Canadian courts. _________________ "Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear." - Thomas Jefferson |

October 28th, 1929:
| Quote: | | On Monday, October 28, the first "Black Monday",more investors decided to get out of the market, and the slide continued with a record loss in the Dow for the day of 13%. The next day, "Black Tuesday", October 29, 1929, about 16 million shares were traded. The volume on stocks traded on October 29, 1929 was "...a record that was not broken for nearly 40 years, in 1968." Author Richard M. Salsman wrote that on October 29—amid rumors that U.S. President Herbert Hoover would not veto the pending Hawley-Smoot Tariff bill—stock prices crashed even further." William C. Durant joined with members of the Rockefeller family and other financial giants to buy large quantities of stocks in order to demonstrate to the public their confidence in the market, but their efforts failed to stop the slide. The DJIA lost another 12% that day. The ticker did not stop running until about 7:45 that evening. The market lost $14 billion in value that day, bringing the loss for the week to $30 billion |

On this day in 1605, Guy Fawkes was arrested for attempting to blow up the entire English government at once at the state opening of Parliament. _________________ "Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear." - Thomas Jefferson |

A good line, even if not strictly accurate. Fawkes was only in the undrcroft, not inside Parliament itself. _________________ "Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear." - Thomas Jefferson |

I've been watching some of the documentaries on the History Channel about this (yes, something managed to distract them from the war porn that usually absorbs this time of year). It is really intriguing. Polyanna Tremonti had an interesting interview this morning with a woman from Leipzig about her experiences of the wall falling, and she said one thing that directly contradicts the usual established capitalist narrative. She said that the East German protesters didn't want the West German system, they just wanted a better socialism. Bet there weren't two words about that in western press coverage in 1989. _________________ "Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear." - Thomas Jefferson |

Oh, the propaganda about this whole anniversary (especially on CTV and Global) has been just vomit-inducing. _________________ "The dignity of an animal is measured by his capacity to revolt in the face of oppression." -- Mikhail Bakunin |

He does look a lot like Michael Ignatieff, doesn't he? _________________ I can't support bike lanes. Roads are built for buses, cars, and trucks. My heart bleeds when someone gets killed, but it's their own fault at the end of the day. - Assclown Rob Ford |
