This reminds me of what I've been told after I entered some of the bathrooms of bars I've visited:

So my cute little baby rescue kitten is now about 10 months old, and he's stressed -- one of the reasons I've been awol recently is that I moved and things haven't entirely settled down. He's also adjusting to the new place.
Male adolescent cat, stress, yup, he's started spraying. So I want to get him fixed asap, but I also don't want to stress him out more. Advice?
All cats hate moving because in the wild, cats only leave their territory in case of either being driven off by a bigger rival cat, extreme starvation, or when they die. So in his mind, moving is an indication something has gone terribly wrong. In my experience (I've had cats all my life and have also moved a LOT), it takes one or two weeks max for them to settle down (sometimes only a few days if lucky). If it is taking any longer, I'd definitely speak to a vet about the stress and he or she will also advice you on when best to operate. Hope your kitten adjusts soon. _________________ I can't support bike lanes. Roads are built for buses, cars, and trucks. Vets will prescribe them (anti-anxiety meds) if the problem is that serious. Hopefully it isn't that serious because just as with humans, prescription drugs can cause nasty side effects as well as an over-dependence problem (both the owner and the cat). _________________ I can't support bike lanes. It's only been just over a week, and he is calmer (although he doesn't like visitors, and I've just had a couple for a few days). Right now he's curled up on my shoulder purring, so he doesn't seem too distressed!
Problem is that he's targeted the plants, which is a bit icky because I don't want to have to keep changing the soil, and it's still a bit chilly to put houseplants outside to air out.
I think the fact that he's in the throes of adolescence isn't helping. Damned testosterone.
Thanks, ET, I'll keep my fingers crossed and I hope that the visit to the vet doesn't freak him out too much. He needs his shots updated before they'll do the snip-snip, so it'll actually be two visits. I'm hoping to avoid kitty tranquillizers although if he keeps acting up, I may need some myself!
Of all the things the kitten does to make me lose my mind, spraying has never been one of them. Getting him in for the operation at six months old was quite possibly the smartest decision I have made in the past year.
We are now working on not clawing things that shan't be clawed... I don't want to have him declawed, but I'd also rather not forgo non-metallic furniture. There has to be a way to succeed at this.

Try half a 25mg Benadryl tablet as a mild sedative/tranquiler. Cats tolerate that much -- t'was prescribed for one of my wards post-surgery years ago and used a time or two since.
As for scratching, some folks 'blunt' their claws/nails for a while because it is the smell from glands in their feet (and neck plus urine) that identifies their space/presence, not the scratch marks.
I have glued some carpet around 4-inch tubes/pipe and then fitted it over a table leg. They preferred it because it was sturdy yet rotated, kept me happy too.
Do wrap some carpet over the ends to protect the table legs. ...

Vundo, do you trim your kitty's claws? I do and it makes a big difference; he can still enjoy the scratching post (he's good about not hitting the furniture, unlike another cat I've taken care of who's pretty much shredded the side of the couch). I put the scratching post right next to the couch and that helps, too. Plus, I play with him with the post -- putting a toy on the top of it and wiggling it temptingly gets him climbing up, and he almost automatically starts to scratch it.

So I got him to the vet and now he's back. A little groggy but he ate and drank and is now cleaning himself in the afternoon sun, quite relaxed. Let's hope it lasts! And I don't feel quite so guilty as I did when I dropped him off this morning ... after another night of hormonal yowling.
I was quite appreciative of how the vet got him slotted in for his operation so quickly.

Ha. No, I'm hoping he's not overly self-conscious about the much-reduced size of his scrotum.
He should forget rather quickly. It's only us inferior human males who are constantly self conscious about our sex organs (and their size). Cats with their superior intellect quickly realize that sex isn't everything and that there are more important things in life (such as eating, playing and sleeping 23.99 hours a day). Once the pain is gone and the stitches have been removed, he should be completely content with his reduced non-existent testicles. _________________ I can't support bike lanes. My pug, Smiley D Guy could get himself through the wire of the fence around the dawg yard. It took a bit of squirming but the little bugger would go walk-about at least once a day...then he was old enough and big enough and off to the vet he went...first time he tried to get through the fence he banged his sore spot...and hasn't tried since.
If I could just figure out a way to stop the bark bark barking... he seems convinced the road which runs in front of our place is HIS and nobody else is allowed to use it... maybe set up a toll, put him in charge of collecting the munny?

In my experience, little dogs seem to be the most vocally aggressive about defending what they consider to be their "territory". _________________ I can't support bike lanes. Oh daawwg. Our cockapoo defends the back alley fence with a ferocity twice his size. He runs all sixty feet barking his head off at any dog being walked in the alley. A couple of regulars made a concerted effort to introduce even the dogs to no effect...the alley is his, no exceptions.
Tehanu, if the peeing is still an issue, don't be afraid to use the kitty prozac. We had Penelope on it for quite a while because of the danged calico territorality issue. Basically, if Joulsie the Spook had a favourite place, Penelope would piss on it. Newly recovered armchair got hit several times, as did an antique couch, repeatedly. Eventually we stripped down the couch and recovered it, but she hit it again. The blond guy was ready to take her out to a farm, which I wouldn't permit - for a pampered housecat it would have been a death sentence.
Anyway, we kept the furniture she had a tendency to hit covered with plastic and kept her medicated. She was a little less playful and active (not a bad thing, she's a hyper little kitty), but still more or less herself. She was on the meds for a long time and we started weaning her off after she went a year without peeing outside the box. It also helped that we started letting her go outside, which seems to relieve some of the household territorality.
I still keep the furniture covered most of the time, but even when I forget she hasn't done anything. She's back to her hyperactive self. The meds worked well for us.

Fingers crossed, Timebandit -- it's only been three days since his operation and he's now back to his normal sweet self. Playing a lot, but not yowling, biting or as far as I can tell, spraying.
Before he became testosterone-free, he hit several plants which is a hassle. I transplanted some of them (they needed it anyway) into fresh soil, and there's some tomatoes that are almost ready to go out, but I'm leery about the weather.
I'm taking a bit of a risk right now because I just started a bunch of seeds -- late, I know, but I only moved two weeks ago to the place that has garden potential, which I'll post about on another thread. Anyway, the seed flats are on a table next to the window, and I'm hoping he doesn't see them as a new litter box.
Try placing cut lemon wedges around them. Cats don't like citrus, this might dissuade him from going there. We tried lemons on the furniture, but busy people and out of sight, out of mind... Just couldn't manage to swap them out frequently enough. But it might work for your starter garden plants!

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Inside Google’s secretive X laboratory, known for inventing self-driving cars and augmented reality glasses, a small group of researchers began working several years ago on a simulation of the human brain.
There Google scientists created one of the largest neural networks for machine learning by connecting 16,000 computer processors, which they turned loose on the Internet to learn on its own.

Damn lousy pet owners! Some asshat dumped their cat near my place while I was away this weekend. It was hiding under my stairs right as they are grading the lot of my new house. He was about to be buried alive. Using info on the collar, I called the BC owners several times and left them increasingly nasty messages to no avail. Local government told me that they will do nothing about this as they purport some responsible pet owner philosophy. Basically, this philosophy means fuck y'all. I ended up taking it to the vet because he was gonna get eaten by the coyotes soon. Not sure how he avoided them as long as he did. The vet phones up the owner and the woman actually answered (probably because it was from a different number) and she said "she has never owned a cat" (except for a cat matching this guy's description), she lives in BC and her cat that she has never owned couldn't have gone there, not sure how her phone number ended up on the tag etc. The vet said it was the weirdest call she had ever had.
I don't get why people do this. Why dump the animal on the road? Why not take it to the human society or something?

Because some people are vain and selfish. Bringing the cat in means that you might appear like some insensitive jerk who has their priorities f*cked. Just abandoning the poor animal can give the person whatever out they need (it ran away, never owned one). _________________ “If my grandmother had wheels, she'd be a tractor.”

I suppose I just cannot grasp how this does not weigh upon them. I would be worried that the cat would be eaten by coyotes. We have a lot of them out here. You can hear several packs of them every night. You could tell it was an indoor cat too with few skills to protect himself. Anyways, the owner is an asshole.

So are you going to adopt the cat, Cartman? Become a cat-person? Hmmmmm???
I want a pic.
That is a really bizarre situation. It's not as though someone would put a fake phone number on the cat collar. Sounds like a pet dump to me, but you'd think someone dumping a pet would take the collar off ... weird.
Poor little kitty. I cannot comprehend how somebody could be that cruelly callous. I would be wracked with guilt if there was a legitimate I couldn't keep my cat and had to drop him with a humane society, much less even contemplating just abandoning him like that.

Not so much. I have two mental dohgs already. I don't think it would work out very well. One of the vet assistants is going to take him if he does not find a home. I think they need to give the owners 14-15 days to claim him first. I am not sure how useful he will be on her farm given a mouse walked right in front of him the other night in my garage and he didn't even flinch. I get the sense that he is a couch cat.
