So apparently Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall has accused Barack Obama of damaging Canada-US relations because of energy. I find it ironic, considering that any time Canada stands up to the US, the right accuses Canada of damaging that relationships. So what's up with Wall doing this? Why does anybody take seriously what the right-wing says about Canada-US relations?

It's fairly simple. Enviromentalists in the US, including some big-time political donors, tend to vote Democrat. So, Obama has to appear to say and maybe do things to make them happy.

Environmentalists in Canada don't vote Conservative. So, Harper and Co. feel free to attack enviromentalists and their political allies, including Obama, without suffering much electoral damage.

There's a possible risk for Harper, though, because outside the far-left and far-right poles of the political spectrum, Obama personally remains quite popular in Canada. So, picking a fight with him from the right might get the folks on Free Dominion cheering, but could possibly alienate others.

For years CSIS has cited the potential for the most extreme environmentalists to resort to violence. But some critics have accused the Conservative government of taking the message much further with none-too-subtle warnings about "environmental and other radical groups" bent on derailing major oil, forestry and mining projects.

Radical environmentalism on the rise, RCMP report says
