Maybe it comes from having grown up in Appalachia, where coal mining is still an overwhelmingly dominant industry, but I cannot think of a job I would less rather do than coal mining. Sewer line cleanup, manually clearing a minefield, you name it. Even the miners not killed in accidents like this have to live in miserable working conditions, with half an inch of coal dust on everything in their houses, until they die of black lung at age 48.
Though the full version on YouTube has been pulled, you can still find a Greek-subtitled version of the fantastic documentary Harlan County U.S.A. online. Harlan is a Kentucky coal-mining county near the Tennessee and Virginia borders, best known for its violent labor strikes and being the birthplace of the song "Which Side Are You On?". The documentary features shots of company gun thugs actually shooting at strikers on camera. |
