Hello everyone, it's that time again.
Nominations are now open for the three moderator positions, and will remain open until 11:59PM, PST on February 28. Voting will then be open for seven days, starting March 1.
All three incumbent moderators (Diane Demorney, Tehanu and yours truly) are running for re-election. If you wish to put your name forward for election, please post in this thread, and send a PM to Steve GTG and to one or more of the moderators letting us know.
Let the games begin. _________________ "Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear." - Thomas Jefferson

Why, bagkitty, are you offering to bribe me to run for moderator? Shucks, that's going above and beyond. |

Is it out west that there used to be a noticeable disdain for two-dollar bills, as a result of them being the lure in a vote-buying scandal many decades ago? Nobody wanted to be seen spending one, lest people think they sold their vote. Admittedly, for a lousy deuce, but I think it was back when two dollars would buy many gramophone records and jars of pomade.
Anyway, how about a little populism here, in lieu of the current "dictator for life" complacency? Who's gonna bring in Farmville? Who's ready to promise bigger fonts and more appealing colours if given a mandate? Anyone keen on abolishing some of the more restrictive clauses of the AUP?
C'mon. EARN IT. _________________ ø¤°`°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°`°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°°¤ø, |

I trust, Magoo, that this will help entail a certain ... cooperation. Don't spend it all at once!

The version I heard was that two-dollar bills were taboo in the west because two bucks was the standard rate at brothels. I read this in a newspaper, though what their source was, I don't know. |

| Hey, can someone post instructions on how to vote? It's been a year since the last election, and I don't figure out technical procedures easily. |

I'm gonna say that's a bit of hyperbole. I'm pretty sure I saw $2 bills in Alberta in the 70s, quite regularly in fact. Maybe the taboo was strongest in Alberta compared to anywhere else in Canada(though I think the first mention I heard of it was in that newspaper article I referenced, which was well after the 1970s), but that's not the same thing as saying it was strong in absolute terms. |

Agree with you there VotD, though I'm too young to remember 70's...in the 80's my mom would give me lunch money for school and a decent number of times I remember getting $2 bills.
the again...maybe she was pawning them off on me as she couldn't spend them and I was too innocent to be rejected for a $2 bill by the cafeteria staff. heh _________________ Now is not the time for you Liberal fools, its time for a witch hunt. - Bloc Party |

Um, funny story, I don't actually know how to set up a vote. Only DD and Steve GTG apparently know how, and neither of them appear to be around at the moment. Either way, when the vote gets opened up, we will have a full seven days of voting. _________________ "Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear." - Thomas Jefferson |

I've done it before but right now am bumping into slight technical difficulties because it appears the voting centre is not having a good day. Stay tuned ...

Okay. So where do I go to vote? When I log in, the "voting centre" thing at the top of the screen disappears.
Sorry to be an idiot, but I really can't remember how any of this works.
EDIT: Never mind, I figured it out. |

Is there a "NO" option on this ballot.

Hehe. Think it was a shakeup when Rob Ford inherited the Mayor's chain?
Lordy. That's the sort of thing that gets people selling off all of their belongings and waiting out in a field. _________________ ø¤°`°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°`°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°°¤ø, |

Yes, you'll see just how much when we start using EM resources to buy tickets to Tehanu's birthday party gala. _________________ "Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear." - Thomas Jefferson |

And like the cattle of Mississauga, we'll reflexively vote for you anyway! Heck, misuse your authority to help your son's business, then make EM pay for his lawyer! We'll be out raising money for your statue. _________________ ø¤°`°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°`°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°°¤ø,¸_¸,ø¤°°¤ø, |

Hello, everyone. As usual, I'm late to the party.
I want to thank everyone who voted!
Just so you know, I consider being a moderator here one of my life achievements (sad, really ). I love this place, even though I don't express it very well. Just sayin' _________________ Scissors cuts paper. Paper covers rock. Rock crushes lizard. Lizard poisons Spock. Spock smashes scissors. Scissors decapitates lizard. Lizard eats paper. Incidentally, this is another one of those cases where "The West" is thrown around inaccurately. Perhaps "the prairies"? I've never seen evidence of any anti-two-dollar-bill thing in BC, and remember my parents commenting that this was another contrast between BC and Alberta. They always figured it's because the US practically doesn't use the things and Albertans all seemed to imagine/wish that they were actually Texans, so . . . |

As the first thrower, I'm not even certain that this was a Canadian thing. All I remember is the word "West" in there.

I remember when they first rid of the $2 bill from circulation, I thought the bimetallic twonie was so neat. And who could take issue with something bearing the image of the majestic polar bear? Now I certainly like the twonie for the convenience of always keeping one in the watch pocket of my pants as a coffee fund. My regard for the coin may not survive inflation forcing coffee above the $2 mark.
Which means, for reference in future mod election campaigns, my vote can always be bought by the promise of a legislated $2(post tax) cap on brewed coffee prices. |

One of the partners at my law firm, who grew up in Alberta, confirmed that it is an Alberta thing, but says that it is tied to the policies of Social Credit, and the fact that at the time, Canada didn't issue two dollar bills, but the Social Credit people did. Because social credit had no real value outside of Alberta, people treated those two dollar social credit bills as funny money, and the concern with them stuck even after the Bank of Canada started issuing two dollar bills. _________________ "Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear." - Thomas Jefferson |
