|
|
All Is Forgiven.
| Quote: | No school in Alberta bears the name of Pierre Elliott Trudeau, but that might soon change.
The Calgary Board of Education is thinking about naming a new kindergarten to Grade 4 school after the former Liberal prime minister who enraged Albertans in 1980 with his national energy policy.
... Trudeau is just one of three names under consideration by the board.
The two other names in the running are Royal Oak, named after the northwest community where the school is located, or Daryl (Doc) Seaman, a Calgary entrepreneur and philanthropist who died last year. |
Now, maybe it's just me, but I'd consider naming a school "Seaman" would pretty much guarantee mucho taunting during, say, track and field championships or inter-school hockey games. Best go with PET. |

Although I sincerely appreciate the immaturity of your post, don't ever say that out loud when you come to Calgary! Doc was very, very popular in this neck of the woods. |

Yes, eight-year olds. They huddle in gangs here and seek out people making jokes about Seaman. Kinda like those kids on Hostel II.
Do you not like Seaman Tehanu? |

Do I like Seaman? Is that a loaded question, Cartman?
(If you're asking about the man, I'm afraid that his influence hasn't really spread to this neck of the woods.) |

In Edmonton, there is a Catholic school named for Louis St. Laurent, though of course his tenure dates back to the days when Liberals were actually winning seats in Alberta on a regular basis. And nowadays most high-school kids probably have only the sketchiest idea about who he was.
| Quote: | Political scientist Duane Bratt points out that, historically, Trudeau was no better or worse than any other Canadian prime minister.
"They are going to say Trudeau tried to destroy the Albertan economy, tried to destroy the oil and gas, let billions of dollars leave the province," said Bratt, associate professor of political science at Mount Royal University in Calgary.
"Louis Riel led an armed rebellion against the government of Canada and yet we named a school after him."
|
That "yet" in Dr. Bratt's last sentence could probably be more accurately rendered as "therefore". At least insofar as the naming of the school was meant to reflect white, middle-class Albertan sensibilities. |

Shouldn't that be causing Alberta head explosions? He rebelled against the Feds, which good, but he was Metis, which is bad. We like rebellion, but we hate the damn Injuns. *Kablooie* _________________ "Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear." - Thomas Jefferson |

I remember back when the western separatists were in their early 80s heyday, some of them issued a series of stamps commemorating people they regarded as heroes. For some reason this made the local news, nd one of the stamps, in fact, did commemorate Louis Riel for his rebellion against the federal government.
| Quote: | | We like rebellion, but we hate the damn Injuns. |
What surprised me more was that they were honouring a French-identified guy, since if you know anything about the western separatists, anti-French sentiment was much more central to their message than anti-Metis sentiment. But apparently this letter-writer(I'm guessing this was from Alberta Report but I'm not sure) saw Riel as a precursor to, of all things, the anti-bilibgualism fight...
| Quote: | Russell Doern left an example that we all should heed; an example that tells us our freedom needs our constant individual and total effort to maintain. That effort was found in our Western pioneers, mostly from various Christian European ethnic origins. These people gave their all to create a free democratic society in Western Canada. We must not falter.
Russell's action in that undemocratic French language episode of 1983, is reminiscent of Louis Riel in defiance of an "Ottawa power" steamrollering over him -- and this Ottawa power has continued to shaft the west.
Winnipeg has just lost a future Mayor; Manitoba has lost a courageous servant of the people; and Western Canada has lost a concerned Westerner. Worst of all, a family lost a father, son and brother.
|
I can report that my father, along with at least one of my teachers, had a pretty low opinion of Riel. Though I'm not sure if they were expressing typical Albertan sentiments, or just typical anglo-Canadian sentiments. My mother thought quite highly of him, but then, she's Franco-Manitoban.

STAN
Look, the sea people have evolved to an Egyptian-like culture.
TWEEK
Soon they'll discover frozen food.
CARTMAN
That should be enough water, Kyle. You got the new sea-people packets, Tweek?
TWEEK
Uh-uh huh.
STAN
Well, drop them in!
CARTMAN
And I've got the sea men.
KYLE
Wow. That's a lot of sea men you've got there, Cartman.
CARTMAN
Yeah, I bought all that I could at this bank, and then I got the rest from this guy Ralph in an alley.
STAN
That's cool.
CARTMAN
Yeah, and the sweet thing is, this stupid asshole didn't even charge me money for it. He just made me close my eyes and suck it out of a hose. Heh. There we go. |

Yeah, he really is enough of a megalomanic without us feeding his delusions of grandeur. _________________ "Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear." - Thomas Jefferson |

But Tehanu, we could always do a little "tampering" with his food supply.
