Dan Savage:

Palin takes her founding fathers like she takes her newspapers -- "all of 'em!"

Jeebus, and she graduated from a certified college?

Obama should take a close look at the standards of some of the educational institutions.

I just can't decide if he should give them more money and hope it improves their teaching practices, or if he should cut all funding because they're hopeless.

But the "dumbing down" continues here, too. Entrance exams at many of our colleges and universities have been made easier because even the "A" level graduates from our high schools couldn't pass the exams...

Rather than fund an improvement of the high school curriculum, they just took out the hard questions.

I have a granddaughter doing grades nine and ten in one year, and she has two to three hours homework a night... she's pulling in top marks, and that's all well and good but when I look at what she's being taught in grade nine-ten it looks very much like what we struggled with in grade seven.

I don't tell her that. Why bum her out? But it seems a shame to waste the fine mind she has. Right now she has her sights set on social work but I'm hoping to slip in some information which will encourage her to look beyond that...

Mostly what I do is cuddles, quick hugs and "Grandma is SO proud of you, you're working hard and doing well, and the whole family knows it.".

Already she could outsmart Palin, but then I'm of the opinion the four year old could, too.

not that I have a strong opinion where Palin is concerned.

But you all understand that already, right?

Anne, I have no doubt whatsoever that my cat could outsmart Palin. I think you or I could make Palin cry with the ol' "got-yer-nose" trick. It doesn't even feel like a joke when I write this.

What was she supposed to say?

"George Washington"
"You mean the guy who was in favor of a strong Federal government and accepted the Bill of Rights only grudgingly?"

"Huh... Alexander Hamilton"
"You mean the guy who basically wanted to just get rid of State governments to keep only the central government?"

"Thomas Jefferson, maybe?"
"The guy who rewrote the Bible taking out all supernatural aspects he found ridiculous?"

"Is it me or is it hot in here... oh, Benjamin Franklin!"
"The guy who said the personal property that is vital to someone's survival is their unalienable right, but everything else is owned to the Public who can therefore seize it and redistribute it for the Greater Good?"

No, Palin knows her crowd. The founding fathers as individuals were a varied group, many of whom would disagree, sometimes violently, with the vision of the group that keeps venerating them. Better to keep them as an idea rather than different people, an idea that can be forged in myth to support their positions that would otherwise be laughed out of the mainstream. That's probably all most know about them, the myth about them that sustains the right-wing in the US. I don't know if Palin knows any more about them than the ignoramus of the "Tea Parties", but even if she does, she's must better perpetuating the myth of the founding fathers, and not their reality.

I wouldn't give that moron the credit. She hasn't the foggiest idea beyond what she was told about George Washington when she was a little girl.

And for that matter, she was talking to Glenn Beck. Does anybody expect him to challenge a statement of Republican-American patriotism? And by using reason?

Sarah Palin's PAC spent more money buying her book than it did giving to candidates:

Quote:
The papers filed over the weekend show SarahPAC spent $47,777 on copies of 'Going Rogue' during the last 6 months of the year. Meanwhile, she handed out just $43K in donations to candidates seeking federal office. The PAC bought the books from HarperCollins, Palin's publisher. The FEC reports show Palin has been purchasing the book to send to donors, some of whom got a copy after contributing a certain amount to the PAC.

You say you want a revolution:

Quote:
"America is ready for another revolution," Sarah Palin declared as she assailed President Barack Obama in a speech before adoring "tea party" activists who would make a seemingly natural constituency if she runs for president.

"This movement is about the people," the 2008 Republican vice-presidential nominee said Saturday as the crowd roared. "Government is supposed to be working for the people."

Mocking Obama's 2008 campaign slogan, Palin noted Democrats' U.S. state electoral losses since Obama took office a year ago with talk of hope and promises of change and asked: "How's that hope-y, change-y stuff workin' out for you?"

For the life of me I will never understand why Palin has any popularity among any segment of society. She lacks political knowledge and experience, she was a major factor in why the Republicans got their asses handed to them last election, and she is unable to speak coherently. This is precisely the time when the US needs great leaders, not dolts like Palin (and Brown). She is a great symbol for the decline of the USian empire. Palin is to America what the Hummer was to General Motors.

I'm surprised she would need cheat notes (or teleprompters, for that matter) to come up with such zingers as "How's that hope-y, change-y stuff workin' out for you?" Rolling Eyes

Frankly, for years I've challenged people who have generalized about Americans, because many, many Americans are wonderful and progressive, and there are indeed lots of positive aspects of American society. But seeing Palin's popularity makes it hard not to buy into knee-jerk anti-Americanism.

And calling for a revolution? Does the phrase "sour grapes" mean anything to you, Ms. Palin? You lost an election and now you want a revolution. Great.

Palin: The only way Obama can save his second term would be to declare war on Iran.

As for attacking Iran...outside of the Teabagging US fringe, there's only two groups of people who hope for this: the extreme right of the Israeli Likud and the pro-Ahmadinejad forces in Iran (who want anything, ANYTHING to distract the growing protest movement). Outside of this, no one seriously wants an attack on Iran. Not even the US military or intelligence services, who have their hands full in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sarracuda ain't dangerous, she's a joke. ROTFL

Tripp Palin Enjoys Socialized Medicine

Quote:
One more rung in Mee-Maw Palin's Hypocrisy Ladder:

Quote:
The dangers of "death panels" were explained to Americans on Sarah Palin's Facebook page. Oh, sweet Lord, she must not sleep at night...her grandson could be the next victim of "socialized medicine". Recently released documents from the custody battle show clearly Tripp Palin Johnston has socialized health care through Indian Health Services and the Alaska Native Medical Center. Palin's family has federally funded health care afforded to them...but if you had it Barack Obama might kill you. Put this on the list of Palin's Greatest Hypocritical Hits...volume 97.

Not surprising in the slightest, is it?

Bristol Palin Lands TV Series Role

Quote:
America's most famous unwed mother will play herself in an upcoming ABC series called The Secret Life Of The American Teenager.

Quote:
Bristol Palin, daughter of former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, will play herself as a friend to the show's protagonist, Amy, at a music program for teen mothers. "Secret Life" focuses heavily on how Amy's family and friends deal with her own unexpected pregnancy. "We're thrilled to have [Bristol] join us, and I think she will bring additional attention to the issues facing teen parents that we've been exploring for a couple seasons now," "Secret Life" executive producer Brenda Hampton said in a statement.

Bristol recently appeared on Oprah to announced that she has re-pledged to abstain from sex until she is married. Because that worked out so great the first time.

I want this woman billed for every dollar she and her family have sucked out of our PUBLIC health care system. And I want every rightwing ass in the USA who has been nattering on about perceived deficiencies in our PUBLIC health care system to give us a PUBLIC apology, because their own little darling is clearly a hypocritical sack 'o shit.

Apparently her family would "hustle" over to Whitehorse for health care when they lived in Skagway, Alaska when she was a kid. Although in previous iterations of the story of her brother with a burned foot, they went to Juneau. Um. This was pointed out by The Mudflats (fabulous blog that has had a heyday with Palin), who gleefully pointed out:

Quote:
Yes. Ironic, indeed. And it’s a good thing that “little kid accident things” were not, in this case, subject to the dreaded socialist Death Panel that she warns us about, if we model our own health care system after that of the Canadians. We can’t quite call Palin a hypocrite on this one, though, since she was only a small child at the time. Her parents apparently thought that Canadian socialized healthcare was good enough for their children, but we don’t know what Palin herself would do as an adult if one of her children was burned near the border. We shouldn’t just jump to conclusions.

But it’s worthy of note that it continues to be “kind of ironic” that since Todd Palin is part Alaska Native, that Sarah Palin while pregnant with his children, Todd, his mother, the Palin’s children and her grandson are all eligible for ongoing coverage from Alaska’s own (very successful) version of socialized medicine through Indian Health Services. Again, no death panel worries.

But the Calgary Herald, who covered the event this weekend was curious about these stealth trips across the border from Skagway to Whitehorse, and found this little tidbit from Skagwaynews.com. Remember that Alaska’s capital, Juneau is not accessible by road, and can only be reached by the state ferry sytem, private boat, or plane.

Quote:
She said new DOT Commissioner Leo von Scheben is committed to a strong ferry system. She added that “a lot of politics were played in the past, and that is why we changed characters,” bringing in sound transportation minds to figure out “how people who are reliant on the ferry system can get from point A to point B with a reliable schedule and service.”

Palin drew from her Skagway past to illustrate her point. Her brother burned his foot badly jumping through a fire, and her mother had to take him down to Juneau on the ferry to the hospital. “All these years later, that’s still what people have to rely on here in some instances,” she said.

So, what about that “Point B” anyway? Was “Point B” Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory via stealth border crossing, or was “Point B” Juneau, Alaska via the Alaska state ferry system? Inquiring minds want to know.

Is it possible that young Chuck Heath, Jr. had not one, but TWO “little kid accident things” that involved burns of the ankle and foot? Or, perhaps the story was simply tweaked to tell people what they want to hear, while utilzing the perennial “I’m one of you” meme – a great way to “connect to the audience” while skirting those pesky things known as “facts.”

Oh, and guys, you can shut up about Danny Williams, now, too. Seems more of you are coming here than us going there.

Quote:
Sarah Palin’s weekend admission that her family once travelled to Canada to receive treatment under the public health-care system she’s so often demonized prompted skepticism and ridicule Monday among her critics in the United States.

“My first five years of life we spent in Skagway, Alaska, right there by Whitehorse,” the former Alaska governor said Saturday night during a speech in Calgary.

“Believe it or not — this was in the ‘60s — we used to hustle on over the border for health care that we would receive in Whitehorse. I remember my brother, he burned his ankle in some little kid accident thing, and my parents had to put him on a train and rush him over to Whitehorse and I think, isn’t that kind of ironic now. Zooming over the border, getting health care from Canada.”

... A report last spring by Deloitte Center for Health Solutions said 750,000 Americans travelled abroad for medical care in 2007, and forecast that number would rise to six million by 2010. That trend far outpaces the number of Canadians coming to the U.S. for medical treatment.

Toronto Star.

This did make me laugh, though:

Willow Palin Accused Of Vandalism Of Alaska Home

Quote:
Alaskan blogs are claiming that Sarah Palin's 15 year-old daughter Willow has been identified as part of a gang of teenagers that broke into and vandalized a home in Wasilla.

Quote:
Calculations are that the home suffered between twenty to thirty thousand dollars in damage. Sources say it appeared the teens stayed in the house for several hours, perhaps even overnight. The Troopers were quickly notified and the investigation began. And at first there were very few leads. Then in January some information came to light which identified one of the perpetrators. This led to the revelation that the participants were 12 local teens who had used the empty house for a party, a party which had clearly spun badly out of control. As you have undoubtedly surmised by now one of the teenagers identified was Willow Palin. As the investigation progressed the children’s parents were notified one by one, including the Palins.

When Sarah was confronted with Willow’s involvement she at first said that it was impossible since Willow was out of town. However when Troopers interviewed the other teens, every single one of them identified Willow as a participant, and further revealed that it was she who directed the other teens to the house, which she knew to be empty, for the sole purpose of having a party. (In today's post AlaskaWTF called Willow the ringleader. Which is accurate in that it was she who knew the location of the house, but whether or not she was involved in the incredible destruction is still undetermined.)

According to the above-linked bloggers, the Palins used their "connections" to ensure that only the boys involved in the crime would be charged. They note that the National Enquirer named Willow Palin as a participant back in January.

That's excruciating ... and what I didn't realize is that the radio station that pranked Palin by making her think she was talking with Sarkozy actually referenced the film directly when speaking to her ... calling it "edgy" no less.

Actually, reading the whole transcript for the first time, it's pretty damn hilarious.

Quote:
Audette: Yes, hello, Governor Palin? Yes, hello, Mrs. Governor?

Palin: Hello this is Sarah, how are you?

Audette: Fine, and you, this is Nicolas Sarkozy speaking, how are you?

Palin: Oh... so good, it’s so good to hear you. Thank you for calling us.

Audette: Oh, it’s a pleasure.

Palin: Thank you sir, we have such great respect for you, John McCain and I, we love you and thank you for spending a few minutes to talk to me.

Audette: I follow your campaigns closely with my special American Advisor Johnny Hallyday, you know?

Palin: Yes! Good!

Audette: Excellent! Are you confident?

Palin: Very confident and we’re thankful that the polls are showing that the race is tightening and--

Audette: Well I know very well that the campaign can be exhausting. How do you feel right now my dear?

Palin: Ah, I feel so good. I feel like we’re in a marathon and at the very end of the marathon, you get your second wind and you plow to the finish—

Audette: You see, I got elected in France because I’m real and you seem to be someone who’s real as well.

Palin: Yes, yeah, Nicolas, we so appreciate this opportunity.

Audette: You know, I see you as a president, one day, you too.

Palin: [laugh] Maybe in 8 years.

Audette: Well, ah, I hope for you. You know we have a lot in common because personally one of my favorite activities is to hunt too.

Palin: [giggle] Oh very good, we should go hunting together.

Audette: Exactly! We could go try hunting by helicopter, like you did, I never did that.

Palin: [giggle]

Audette: Like we say in France, "on pourrait tuer des bébés phoques aussi".

Palin: [giggle] Well I think we could have a lot of fun together as we’re getting work done, we can kill two birds with one stone that way.

Audette: I just love killing those animals. Mm, mm. Take away a life, that is so fun!

Palin: [hahahaha]

Audette: I’d really love to go as long as we don’t bring your Vice president Cheney. [hahahaha]

Palin: No, I’ll be a careful shot, yes.

Audette: You know we have a lot in common also except that from my house I can see Belgium. That’s kind of less interesting than you.

Palin: Well, see, we’re right next door to other countries that we all need to be working with, yes.

Audette: Some people said in the last days, and I thought that was mean, that you weren’t experienced enough in foreign relations, and you know, that’s completely false, that’s the thing I said to my great friend, the Prime Minister of Canada, Stef Carse.

Palin: Well, he’s doing fine, too, and yeah when you come into a position underestimated, it gives you the opportunity to prove the pundits and the critics wrong. You work that much harder-

Audette: I, I was wondering because you are also next to him, one of my good friends, also, the prime minister of Quebec, Mr. Richard Z. Sirois, have you met him recently? Did he come to one of your rallies?

Palin: Uh, haven’t seen him at one of the rallies, but it’s been great working with the Canadian officials in my role as governor; we have a great cooperative effort there as we work on all of our resource development projects. You know I look forward to working with you and getting to meet you personally and your beautiful wife, oh my goodness, you’ve added a lot of energy to your country, even, with that beautiful family of yours.

Audette: Thank you very much. You know my wife, Carla, would love to meet you. You know even though she was a bit jealous that I was supposed to speak to you today. [hahahaha]

Palin: [hahahaha] Well give her a big hug from me.

Audette: You know my wife is a popular singer and a former top model and she’s so hot in bed. She even wrote a song for you.

Palin: Oh my goodness! I didn’t know that.

Audette: Yes, in French, it’s called "Du rouge à lèvres sur une cochonne" or if you prefer in English Joe the Plumber, [sings] It’s his life, Joe the Plumber...."

Palin: Maybe she understands some of the unfair criticism but I bet you she is such a hard worker, too, and she realizes you just plow through that criticism like....

Audette: I just want to be sure, I don’t quite understand the phenomenon "Joe the Plumber", that’s not your husband, right?

Palin: Mmhmm, that’s not my husband, but he’s a normal American who just works hard and doesn’t want government to take his money.

Audette: Yes, yes, I understand, we have the equivalent of Joe the Plumber in France, it’s called, "Marcel, the guy with bread under his armpit, oui."

Palin: Right. That’s what it’s all about, is the middle class, and government needing to work for them. You’re a very good example for us here.

Audette: I seen a bit about NBC even Fox News wasn’t an ally, an ally, sorry, about as much as usual.

Palin: Yeah that’s what we’re up against.

Audette: I must say, Governor Palin, I love the documentary they made on your life, you know, Hustler’s Nailin' Palin.

Palin: Oh, good, thank you. Yes.

Audette: That was really edgy.

Palin: [laughs] Well good.

Audette: I really love you. And I must say something, so, Governor, you’ve been pranked. By the Master Avengers. We’re two comedians from Montreal.

Palin: Oohhh have we been pranked? And what radio station is this?

Audette: This is for CKOI in Montreal.

Palin: In Montreal? Tell me the radio station call letters.

At this point, Palin leaves the phone and can be heard in the background telling her aides that the call was "just a radio station prank". Audette is still on the line and jokes that "if one voice can change the world for Obama, one Viagra can change the world for McCain." One of Palin's assistants picks up the phone and says "I’m sorry, I have to let you go. Thank you."

Palin's Fox show caught lifting LL Cool J interview

Quote:
An upcoming Fox News Channel special hosted by Sarah Palin is titled "Real American Stories." But rapper-actor LL Cool J says his participation in the show was bogus. In response, the network has snipped him from the program.

In a Twitter posting late Tuesday, the entertainer wrote that "Fox lifted an old interview I gave in 2008 to someone else & are misrepresenting to the public in order to promote Sarah Palins Show. WOW."

[...]

"Contrary to what was reported, LL Cool J was never scheduled to be a guest on 'Real American Stories' with Sarah Palin this week," Rhett Usry, the artist's spokesman, said in a statement on Wednesday. "The show had planned to use an interview from 2008 that was being repurposed without LL's permission.

"This statement is not a reflection of any feelings LL has toward Fox News or Ms. Palin, whom he has never met, rather a clarification of what we have seen published in the media."

Fox News Channel did not respond to numerous calls and emails from The Associated Press inquiring about the status of the segment with LL Cool J, who was born James Todd Smith.

But in a statement released to other media outlets, the network said: "'Real American Stories' features uplifting tales about overcoming adversity and we believe Mr. Smith's interview fits that criteria. However, as it appears that Mr. Smith does not want to be associated with a program that could serve as an inspiration to others, we are cutting his interview from the special and wish him the best with his fledgling acting career."

*s'NERK*

(BTW, what's this "repurposed" bullshit?! What is that "word" supposed to mean?)

Obviously, in this context, it's a bullshit word with a bullshit meaning, i.e., 'we recorded this interview for one show, then decided to air it again. Which means the original purpose for the show, which was to enhance one show, has changed, and now the purpose is to sell another show.

However, as I read the word I thought of a very good application for it. There are many things in evolution that work exactly like that - some facet of an organism evolving for one reason, then being used in a very different way later on. A good example is the hammer, stirrup and anvil of the mammalian ear, which started off as reptilian jaw bones.

From Jaw to Ear: Transition Fossil Reveals Ear Evolution in Action

Describing this evolutionary phenomenon with the word 'repurposed', or perhaps 'repurposing', seems to be a good idea, even if it is a tad teleological.

Why is it that Republican candidates for top office never seem to know who the Prime Minister of Canada is?

Sarah Palin Increases Income By 100X

Quote:
Since quitting her job as Alaska governor, Sarah Palin's income has increased 100-fold to an estimated $12M annually. At least.

Quote:
Since leaving office at the end of July 2009, the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee has brought in at least 100 times her old salary – a haul now estimated at more than $12 million -- through television and book deals and a heavy schedule of speaking appearances worth five and six figures. That conservative estimate is based on publicly available records and news accounts. The actual number is probably much higher, but is hard to quantify because Palin does not publicize her earnings. She reputedly got a $7 million deal for her first book, with the bulk of that money due after her resignation as governor, and will earn about $250,000 per episode, according to the web site The Daily Beast, for each of eight episodes of a reality show about Alaska for the The Learning Channel. She has managed to keep a lid on reliable figures for her earnings from a multi-year contract with Fox News and a second book deal with HarperCollins.

A single speaking appearance earns Palin at least $100,000.

Nauseating.

More evidence of how well Sarah Palin communicates with her props (er, family). Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston are engaged, but apparently are afraid to tell Sarah Palin.

So they contacted the news instead. Ah, well.

Quote:
... Palin, the daughter of 2008 vice-presidential candidate and former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, is featured on the cover of Us Weekly with Johnston, holding their son, 18-month-old Tripp.

Bristol Palin tells the magazine that she finds the idea of telling her mother "intimidating and scary."

Us Weekly editor Caroline Schaefer said on NBC'S "Today" show that Palin approached the magazine looking for a platform to explain why she got engaged.

They were.

Wait a day or two and they will be, again.

Ah, young love. There's nothing quite like it....
