The Canadian Activism Archives is an experimental website to try to collaboratively build an archive of social justice and environmental activist histories in Canada, as well as useful guides for activism here. It's set up so that anyone can contribute to the content on the site. (It's based on the same open-contribution/participation, wiki, software that Wikipedia uses.)

This project has been on my list of ten million things to do ever since I started the Activist Network in 1999. I believe that we (activists) lose too much when we fail to keep and share our histories. It can be deeply empowering to be aware of the incredible successes of activism that has gone before - not to mention the many lessons learned which we only benefit from if we can collectively remember them.

There's very little on the site so far (I haven't been working on it very long yet, and there've only been a couple other contributors so far), so please take a look and consider signing-up to make contributions about our activist history.

The starting categories of articles include:
  • Past Events
  • Issues
  • Campaigns
  • People
  • Organizations (groups, projects, coalitions, etc.)
  • Tactics
  • Terminology
  • Guides (directions, advice, how-to's, etc.)
(This new site is not intended to replace the various existing services that act as sites for announcements of upcoming events and actions.)

I've described the site as being "an experiment." This is to encourage the view that the structure and direction of the site are up for open discussion, too. There's a whole section, called "Community Portal," dedicated to just that - figuring out what we collectively want this site to be.

Thanks,
Grant Neufeld in Calgary

This week, I've been doing a bunch of work to bring in information from the G8 protests in 2002 (relying heavily on the old g8.activist.ca website). If anyone has information to contribute to that, it would be much appreciated.

I've also been pulling in articles from Wikipedia that relate to activism in Canada.

I'm looking for further ways to promote this project and get more people involved. Suggestions would be quite welcome.

Thanks.

Hey, this is cool (and thanks to linking to EnMasse from the Activist Network!). You all should check this site out - I'm sure there are lots of people here who could add valuable content (eg anne cameron's post about the strike could be just cut-and-pasted right in!).

Sounds exactly like the kind of thing I'm hoping for with the project.

You're welcome. Since activist.ca is supposed to be about networking activists together, I figured the link made sense.

The section on guerilla gardening is interesting. And now I'm going to stop browsing because I am supposed to be working!

I've started a new sub-project on the Archives.

On Wikipedia, there are 'collaborations' where a bunch of people agree to work together to do some serious improvement of an article or group of articles. So, now we're doing the same thing on the Canadian Activism Archives.

The first Featured Collaboration has been voted on, so we're now working on articles related to bicycles, especially the various cycling caravans that have taken place over the years (but also things like the Critical Mass bike rides).

Anyone can contribute, so please join in and add any information & stories you have about bicycle related activism in Canada.

(You can still work on any other Canadian activism related articles you want to, too.)

BTW, I've also started an article on the EnMasse Forums that folks here will likely have a thing or two to contribute to.

That's cool, Grant! Thanks for doing that. Very Happy

If I come across any articles that I think you want, I will be sure to send them off to you. I need to read through what you've posted here to catch up on what you are looking for.

Thank you for your contribution to the Wikipedia archives.

I have been trying to post information about our groups involvement in social justice activism, and found alot of relative Canadian social justice activists listed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Canadian_activists

Good work !

I don't entirely get this whole Wikipedia thing, but this is what I've had a chance to enter so far...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Parkinson
and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tracy_Lamourie
and am trying to begin an entry on the CCADP http://ccadp.org that could use some help byway of outside research/contributions to the Wikipedia article. I don't want to be 'blowing my own horn' so to speak, any contributions to this article for the CCADP are appreciated.

I came across a link today, have no idea where now, where Wikipedia gave the credit to Burke for this : ‘All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing’ is WRONG. I am sorry I have no idea where I read that. But there is controversy about that specific quote no doubt.
Apparently it cannot be traced back to Burke word for word.

In any case I did find this: http://www.tartarus.org/martin/essays/burkequote.html

Hmmm. Can you elaborate please? I haven't had that complaint before (and I've been running much more heavily trafficked sites on the same connection for years).

Could it have been one of the occasional internet hiccups that slows things down? Telus is upstream from me (although I'm on an independent ISP) and they are notorious for occasional problems with their pipes. Do you get the same problem repeatedly at different times/days?

Thank-you very kindly for your feedback (both the affirming and the identification of problems). I hope you'll be able to contribute to the project.
