| It is indeed footballese. Usually that would be a sideways pass although it could be a bit of a back pass. Clearly not a forward pass. |

His name is Dan Donleavy, as I now recall. He also calls goalies "keepers," which bugs me. One of these days he's going to call Steve Stamkos a "striker."
I bet if he heard my criticisms, he'd say I was "whinging." _________________ "The purpose of government is to protect the weak from the powerful" Hammurabi

His 9-11 reference?
Maybe now they'll muzzle McLean and just start the hockey games without all that preliminary blather. _________________ "The purpose of government is to protect the weak from the powerful" Hammurabi

Yeah, Maclean says half-a-dozen cringeworthy things every game. Today he was trying to make lame puns about dogs. Before the game today he said that he had nothing to work with regarding dogs and the New Jersey Devils. At that point he probably should have asked himself why he was trying so hard to make connexions between dogs and a hockey game.
On the bright side, Jim Hughson calls a purty decent game as long as the Canucks or Leafs aren't involved. _________________ "The purpose of government is to protect the weak from the powerful" Hammurabi

I just got back from a taping of three episodes of "The Debaters" at the Broadway Theatre.
They're going to edit about three or so hours of action down into three 25-minute shows, which is too bad, since they're likely to cut out a lot of shots taken at Stephen Harper. _________________ "The purpose of government is to protect the weak from the powerful" Hammurabi

Both Charlie Demers and Steve Patterson got in a few shots. Demers also took a few jabs at Brad Wall's government for destroying the film industry here. At on point he said if only the film industry could find a way to be environmentally destructive, it would have the support of the conservatives.
I was a bit disappointed with the debate between Demers and Al Rae, two of my favourite debaters from the radio show. Maybe the topic didn't help: "Who's the greatest Saskatchewan politician, Dief or Tommy?" Ray was way too serious, making political debating points and not letting Charlie speak (Patterson had to go to the gavel a few times to get Ray to shut up), but then Charlie was too flustered to say much beyond how Dief was jowly.
I didn't recognise the names of the others, many of whom were from obscure places like Prince Albert, Moose Jaw and Winnipeg. Lori Gibb was there, debating with a guy about hugs. A couple of guys had a Mac vs. PC debate. There was a debate on handmade goods ( the pro-handmade guy is from BC, I think I've heard him before, but disremember the name, and his opponent was some woman from rural Saskatchewan...I think).
The question for the last debate was "Be it resolved that Saskatchewan is the most boring place on the planet." The guy arguing against this is from Saskatoon (I don't remember his name..O'Shea, maybe?). His final argument was "chairigami," or building a structure by stacking ten patio chairs about 10 feet high. It was an impressive structure, but his opponent said it confirmed his argument, since that was the most impressive thing he'd ever seen in Saskatchewan.
OK, I googled (Howard Glassman said "jewgled" and some of the others said "goo-ogled") around, found the lineup on the Broadway's website:
Debate Topics and Comedians
Who is Saskatchewan’s most significant politician, John G.
Diefenbaker or Tommy Douglas?
- Al Rae and Charlie Demers
Is there a bit too much hugging going on?
- Lori Gibbs and David Pryde
PC versus MAC
- Toby Hargrave and Ivan Decker
Is it harder to be a youngest or oldest child in a family?
- Kelly Taylor and Howard Glassman
Is homemade stuff the best stuff?
- Graham Clark [nice t-shirt] and Lori Gibbs [no it wasn't]

"The Voice" was good on The Current today.
"Peter McKay admits the 2010 press conference announcing the government's F-35 purchase cost taxpayers more than $47, 000.
Currently, McKay adds, "Look, you've got to to spend money to waste money." _________________ "The purpose of government is to protect the weak from the powerful" Hammurabi

Oh well, the CBC has gone back to being a court stenographer of empire.
The other day a CBC bobblehead called Omar Khadr a "war criminal." Today they're regurgitating propaganda saying that the Turks will retaliate if the Syrians threaten them, as if the Turkish warplane the Syrians shot down over Syrian airspace was minding its own business. _________________ "The purpose of government is to protect the weak from the powerful" Hammurabi

I just heard a couple of those Broadway debates on The Debaters. The chair origami actually sounded OK - I was wondering how that would work on radio. _________________ "The purpose of government is to protect the weak from the powerful" Hammurabi

Is Rex friggin' Murphy supposed to be representative of "The Liberal Media?"
He's on Cross Country Checkup right now, mocking and arguing with Obama supporters and, well it's hard to hear exactly what his muffled responses to the Romniacs are, given where his nose is planted while they speak.
By the way, Jill Stein's name wasn't mentioned at all. _________________ "The purpose of government is to protect the weak from the powerful" Hammurabi

It was really bad. He basically cut off callers who were spot on with their criticism of Romney and he was near orgasmic interviewing David Frum and some other pundit from the Hoover Institute (I think?).
OT, is it just my two radios or has the CBC Radio 1 signal become weaker? I seem to get more interference these days than I ever experienced before. _________________ “If my grandmother had wheels, she'd be a tractor.”

Brent Bambury just had on a guest discussing the recent violence in Gaza. Despite his guest's saying that Palestinians are constantly engaged in non-violent resistance against the occupation, he repeatedly asked when Palestinians will "end the violence" and adopt non-violent methods.
Perhaps he doesn't listen to the CBC.
Israeli gunfire kills man in 1st violence since ceasefire
| Quote: | In one incident captured by Associated Press video, several dozen Palestinians, most of them young men, approached the fence, coming close to a group of Israeli soldiers standing on the other side.
Some Palestinians briefly talked to the soldiers, while others appeared to be taunting them with chants of "God is Great" and "Morsi, Morsi," in praise of Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi, whose mediation led to the truce.
At one point, a soldier shouted in Hebrew, "Go there, before I shoot you," and pointed away from the fence, toward Gaza. The soldier then dropped to one knee, assuming a firing position. Eventually, a burst of automatic fire was heard, but it was not clear whether any of the casualties were from this incident
|
That's what happens to Palestinians who engage in non-violent protest against Israelis, Brent. _________________ "The purpose of government is to protect the weak from the powerful" Hammurabi

"This is That" shows how bizarre the "real" news is by being so outrageous, yet sounding exactly like regular news programming.

Brent Bambury was pretty good at hosting a new wave show back in the 80s. Today, though, "Day Six" had a panel discussing the Super-duper Bowl, then US Islamophobia poster-boy Alan Derschowitz came on to ridicule the BDS movement.
Geez, but I miss Peter Gzowski, Jack Farr and Danny Finkleman. _________________ "The purpose of government is to protect the weak from the powerful" Hammurabi

Rex Murphy has the Gauleiter of Hooterville on now, and the topic today is whether immigrants who "engage in terrorism" ought to have their Canadian citizenship revoked.

Or for that matter Canadians who are former or current members of US forces (and there have been thousands over the decades). Guy who lives on my street (Canadian born) served with the USAF in Iraq and can't stop talking about the "rush" he got dropping bombs on "Mooslim terrorists". I also once knew an older man who served in Vietnam. Because he was dying of cancer at the time, I would nod politely while he would show me pictures of himself in US uniform in Vietnam and boasted of "taking out gooks". Why did both these Canadian born white guys join the US forces? Because our own government was "too wimpy" to kill "those that needed to die". _________________ I can't support bike lanes. | Dear CBC. I don't care about the pope. Please, please, please stop writing about him. And please stop with what YOU call the God Particle. No scientist does, so please stop it. Do some investimagation on this. Lastly, I don't care about Lululemon pants being see-through or the comments about consumers of such pants being dumb and/or trashy. Why not actually do some work on how our government is ruining the country. I can get that other crap from the National Enquirer or Weekly World News. At least the WWN makes it interesting. |

| I've about had enough of the Pope stuff, too. Okay, fine, one quit and another replaced him, fine, enough, move on to something which is news. As for the Lululemon see-through pants...shrug...they "recalled" them but probably the publicity was such they've been able to practically sell'em all, each and every pair...as for whether or not they're "tacky", well save the shock and horror for the people who wear their jeans so low you can see the crack of their ass... |

Very little of what we're presented with can be accurately described as 'news.' Mostly, our daily talking to consists of empire's repetitive squawking about itself. With the case of the CBC, people will often say this is 'our' public broadcaster, and saving it is worthwhile even if it rarely does justice to the range of serious issues affecting people across the country and around the world. Apparently it merely requires a reminder and proper direction as to what it's journalistic responsibilities are. In another vein the same could be said of our political operatives and the system in general, about which, the question 'how's that working out' could be asked. _________________ There is this old notion, Bolshevik, a little frigid for sure; the building of the Party. I think that our present war is about giving new content to this depopulated fiction. |

The hacks who write for "As it Happens" are notorious for embarrassingly-bad puns, but today they outdid themselves.
To introduce a story on the death of hundreds of Bangladeshi garment slave-workers in that factory roof collapse, the announcer said "They reap what they sew."
Someone needs to be fired at the CBC. _________________ "The purpose of government is to protect the weak from the powerful" Hammurabi

| I'm telling you, al-Q, it's a national pathology (English and French alike). America's trying it out in a niche market: any story about marijuana must by law include at least three marijuana puns. |

Gag me with a spoon, but the CBC radio news had a "feel good" (or is that "double-plus feelgood"?) piece on "Boston Strong" this morning.
How about a "Fallujah Strong," "Waziristan Strong," "Khashamir Strong," "Ramallah Strong," "Da Nang Strong," "Managua Strong," or "Tripoli Strong" piece from the CBC? _________________ "The purpose of government is to protect the weak from the powerful" Hammurabi

Having been gagged a few times, under more or (more often) less voluntary circumstances, I'm curious about the etymology of this phrase. |
