Just thought I'd pop in to make a semi-definitive statement.

I don't need to hang around a place where I'm either insulted by long-time colleagues, or I'm forced to "debate" with people who constantly misread or misunderstand me and, more importantly, don't care that they do so when it's pointed out to them.

Again, this is above and beyond arguing with people with who I disagree on the most fundamental principles. The behaviour in question applies to two people who one would think notions of comradeship should have applied.

It's been surprisingly easy staying away from this place. Not that anyone cares, but I might return. I left rabble-babble on a point of principle and never returned. Here, I'm just pissed-off and there doesn't seem to be any point in hanging around either pointlessly agreeing with people that neo-liberalism and imperialism are bad, or "debating" with some people who I no longer respect because they insult and argue in bad-faith or hopeless cluelessness.

Well, that's it I suppose.

No one should need to, but we do it anyway. People come and go, and universally no one seems to mind one way or another. The latest massacre in Afghanistan is looked upon in the MSM through the lens of how it impacts on western PR, but it's never about how a system continues to turn out individuals who could aim and fire a weapon at innocent children, anyone really, who are asleep in their homes. They're gone, and this is all that matters in our society. I wish you wouldn't, but I can't bring myself to pick up a violin about it either in light of the news of recent days and years.

Well Thwap, as someone who has read your stuff for years and (mostly) agreed with what you wrote, I hope you stick around. But in the end,
I gotta agree with Slumberjack: in a year that so far has seen the latest (of many, many) slaughters in Afghanistan, the continuing threats against Iran, the continuing assault on reproductive choice and queer rights in the "Red States" of the US, the assault on internet freedom (various proposed net-gagging laws in the US, Canada, EU, India, Russia, the shutting down of Megaupload, Filesonic, BT Junkie, MyBarmyArmy, NordicT, PeerHub, etc. just since January 1, 2012), I'm not going to bring out the violin either. But I do wish you the best in whatever you do, and I hope that I see you posting here again soon. All the best dude. Cool

I am guessing this is in part a reaction to our disagreement, which frankly, I left as an agreement to disagree. I have no problem talking with you with the understanding that there are certain things we just don't see eye-to-eye on.

I'd find it regrettable if you (or anyone, for that matter) felt compelled to leave. There are other places, after all, where there are actual enforced limits to debate, so this seems like a matter on which it is is much easier to reach detente. But ultimately you have to do what you have to do.

Stay or go, it is your decision. Sorry to be a hardass about it, but although I think it would be a shame, it has nothing to do with me, and I bear no responsibility for it.
