What is the Reverse of Payola?
I am certain that this is not the first time that some force other than The Marketplace has decided which song gets to become (officially) popular, and which song languishes in obscurity.
In fact, I lived through a period where I learned that the disk jockeys, who controlled which song gets played and which didn’t, were accepting cash amongst other considerations to influence their decision about what made their playlist.
At the time, it seemed to explain some of the gawdawfullest crap that was making it to the air.
It appears that a twisted perversion of Payola is back, this time linked to a twisted perversion of an American president.
What I like the most about this version of Payola is that this time, it does not appear to be working.

Steve Kroft Profiles Controversial Country Band
New York,
May 14, 2006
. . . The song [Not Ready To Make Nice - Dixie Chicks] fizzled on the charts — yet it's one of most downloaded country songs on the Internet.
"Well, how do you explain the fact that it's No. 37 on the charts and No. 1 in downloads? on iTunes," Kroft asked Maines.
"I think … that when you're in the corporate world, and when that's your livelihood, and when 100 people e-mail you that they'll never listen to your station again, you get scared of losing your job. And why did they need to stand up for us? They're not our friend. They're not our family. And they cave," she explained. . . .

Most computers will be able to play Not Ready To Make Nice by the Dixie Chicks streaming from the Dixie Chicks homepage.
This is #37 on the charts, but the #1 on download from iTunes.
Taking The Long Way the Dixie Chicks' new CD will be coming out on May 23rd. _________________ Relieve The Troops — Bring Them Home Now!

Well, that could also be caused by the fact that you put out a lousy album.
But, when radio doesn't play it because it is #37, yet it is selling at #1, lousiness of content does not appear to be the factor.
Something else is working in the marketplace. _________________ Relieve The Troops — Bring Them Home Now! |

Wikipedia: "By April, the song was a hit on country radio and on country and Hot AC video television in Canada. American radio proved less receptive."
It's #2 on this week's hot AC radio CHUM Chart, and the only country song (excluding, for present purposes, Bon Jovi). |

pay-o-la (pay-o-la) n. - Bribery of an influential person in exchange for the promotion of a product or service, such as that of disc jockeys for the promotion of records.
It is not that the audience HAS to listen, but rather that the work is given a good critique, whether it merits one or not.*
In this regard, the work gains an audience by dint of ersatz popularity, rather than through any meritoriousness of its own.
* This would seem to include every major motion picture released since 1975. _________________ Relieve The Troops — Bring Them Home Now! |

Dixie Chicks' latest album debuts at number one
Raw Story - As Taking The Long Way debuts at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 best-selling albums chart this week, with first week's sales of 525,829, the Dixie Chicks have become the first female group in chart history to have three albums debut at #1, breaking the record the Chicks established in 2002 when the group's last studio album, Home, debuted at #1 and made them the first female group ever to have two albums debut at #1. ... |

I am so not a country girl, really completely a head-banger, but I do like the Dixie Chicks - I think it's their "fuck-you" attitude I find so appealing |

Could we have the reverse of payola? That is, paying radio stations NOT to play something. |
