Well, as an omnivore, I sort of took it as a gratuitous pot shot. For all I know, many of the volunteers could be vegan. In fact, not euthanizing is a position that, on a purely anecdotal level which may statistically mean nothing, I've observed more vegans of my acquaintance take than omnivores.

I have, in fact, been called callous for putting down a critically ill pet in the past, and a sicko for being present when it happened.

I'm an omnivore too.

Really, all I'm trying to do is point out a double standard.

Okay. Maybe I missed something, I don't know that there necessarily is one.

I will say, though, that some of what the G&M reported was pretty grisly. There were extra hugs for the menagerie at Chez Bandit this evening.

Looks like the THS is going to be closed down for the foreseeable future.

Ouch.

What's going to happen in the meantime to the thousands of cats, dogs, and other animals going through the system?

Quote:
The Toronto Humane Society will be closed for the foreseeable future as animal cruelty investigators continue their search warrant, sifting through everything from computers and financial documents to animal food.

"There is no end date on the warrant. We have this building for as long as we need," said lead investigator Kevin Strooband of the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (OSPCA).

The OSPCA had initially planned be at the River St. building until Tuesday, when adoptions were set to resume.

... There are approximately 1,000 animals at the shelter – 800 cats, 100 dogs and some 100 smaller animals, including rabbits, guinea pigs and raccoons.

... The facility will likely continue to operate under the OSPCA with help from THS employees, as it has since provincial investigators descended on the complex last week, Fidani said.

A lawyer for the THS released a statement accusing the OSPCA of improperly interfering "with our employees and regular operation of the premises."

... Since the raid, the OSPCA has asked the Ministry of the Attorney General to appoint a supervisor to take control of the Humane Society and its board, but the request was rejected.

... Late Saturday, the Toronto Humane Society said it was bringing in "a well-respected expert in the field of animal care" to review its operations and act as interim executive director, as well as bringing in a "well respected" veterinarian to head its clinical team.

But the OSPCA is still hoping the government will step in, said lead investigator Kevin Strooband.

And now the shelter has reopened.

They're surprised their donations have gone down by 55% during the past year? I thought it would be more.

Quote:
More than two months after the Toronto Humane Society’s River St. shelter was closed, the facility reopened Monday under a new board of directors.

... “Starting today, we leave behind the turbulent times of the past and move forward with the new and passionate Toronto Humane Society that will be transparent in how we do business,” said president Michael Downey.

Downey made a plea to animal lovers for financial support, citing a 55 per cent reduction in donations compared to this time last year.
